Who Knew?
Yesterday I mowed the grass and discovered a new and intriguing fitness tip. I wear a Fitbit One fitness tracker and try to get 10,000 steps a day. I definitely don’t get that many every day, but I do try. It tickles me when my Fitbit encourages me with messages like “only 1300 more steps until you achieve your daily goal.” And I love it when it calls me an overachiever for going over my 10,000 step goal. Words of encouragement are my love language!
Yesterday I walked in the morning with my friend Cricket, so before lunch I already had my 10,000 steps. I got home after running some errands with Frances and decided to mow grass. This summer since I’m not working very much, I told Will I would do the mowing so we wouldn’t have to pay someone. Our house sits on almost 13 acres, about 5 of which are yard or pasture that require weekly mowing in the summer. I did it when we first moved here about 12 years ago, but gave it up when I got busy with school and work. Mowing at the Reid residence takes about 4 hours, and that’s with our very old Toro 52″ cut zero radius commercial mower. I know nothing about mowers, but people say this one is fast and gets the job done when you have a lot to mow.
So I mowed all afternoon. Our pasture is not that flat and there are gazillions of bumps and places that go up and down. Everything jiggles, including me, as I make my way across the yard. Ya’ll, when I got off that mower and came inside to shower, my Fitbit showed almost 22,000 steps. I got credit for steps by mowing. Sitting down on a riding lawn mower for four hours.
Mowing may be the new CrossFit.
